Why MVHR is becoming popular

Why is Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) becoming so popular?

There’s one thing many of us have in common when needing to remove humid and stale air from inside the home and bringing in fresh air from outside…..we open the windows and doors!

We do it when cooking and showering. We do it when we wake in the mornings and during the Summer evenings. We do it when entertaining people because the environment becomes a little stuffy. We even leave our windows open or on latch during the day or whilst we’re away so that when we return, our home feels fresh rather than stale.

It’s the most effective way to ventilate right? Wrong!

Whilst opening the windows and doors does a good job of inviting fresh air into your home, there are a few things to consider:

  1. It’s not always pleasant when it’s cold outside
  2. It’s not ideal to leave windows open when you’re not home
  3. It’s a fine way of losing valuable heat energy within your home (think of all the heat you lose that you’ve paid for!)

So how do you fix the issue of providing constant fresh air into your home but without the heat loss?
You can consider installing an MVHR system – see our range of units here.

What is mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)?
MVHR is an automated system that works to maintain optimal indoor air quality by extracting stale and humid air from within the property and supplying fresh and filtered air from outside. The heat recovery works via a heat exchanger unit which recycles the heat from the air being extracted from the property to heat the fresh supply air coming from outside.

Extraction valves are fitted in all wet rooms; kitchen, utility, WC, bathroom and en-suites. The MVHR unit constantly pulls the air out of these rooms and will automatically go into ‘boost’ mode when humidity levels rise, e.g. when cooking and showering and is released out of the building. During this process, the air being extracted passes through a heat exchanger in which the heat is recycled to heat the fresh air that is also constantly being supplied to all habitable rooms; living room, dinning room and bedrooms.

Not only are you creating a continuous pleasant environment to live in but you’re also saving on your energy bills of up to 30% each year through the heat recovery process. This makes MVHR an excellent long-term investment.

The benefits of installing an MVHR system

  • Improves energy efficiency
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • No need to open windows for fresh air
  • Removes unwanted odour
  • Reduces surface moisture condensation
  • Protects the home against humidity damage
  • Eliminates mould and mildew
  • May reduce the effects of asthma and allergies
  • Reduces radon levels within the home
